No one was injured Friday night in a reported gang shooting in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive.
Around 10:40 p.m., a reported gang member started firing gunshots at rival gang members he encountered at 7-Eleven, 930 N. Annie Glidden Road. The suspect then started chasing the reported rival gang member while continuing to fire shots, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.
The possible target of the shooting was located a short time later, uninjured, according to a DeKalb Police Department news release. All parties involved fled the scene before police arrived.
“It was one of those meetings of chance, where you have two rival gangs come across each other in the same location,” Spangler said.
The back of the 7-Eleven building had minor damage, and evidence was collected from the scene that showed a shooting had occurred, Spangler said. At the time of the shooting, there were several customers at the store and “quite a few people in the area,” he said.
Surveillance video from the store and several interviews led to the identity of the shooter, who was issued a warrant for aggravated discharge of a firearm. The shooter, whose name has not been released, is a former area resident now living in a different state, Spangler said. It is believed the shooter fled the area and had not been arrested as of 5 p.m. Monday.
Several hours after the shooting, a search warrant was issued for a residence in DeKalb belonging to associates of the shooter, Spangler said. Additional charges could be filed from evidence collected at the residence.
Spangler said it is typical for gang members to start violence without regard for other people’s lives, and incidents like this show gang violence can happen anywhere.
“This should be somewhat shocking for area residents,” he said. “Gang members have total disregard for their own life, let alone anyone else’s life.”
