Remnants of Gustav hit DeKalb

On Monday Sept. 1 and Tuesday Sept. 2 NIU’s temperature reached 90 degrees and then fell to 60 degrees a day later. NIU meterologist, Gilbert Sebenste said the weather is unseasonal for the time of year.

In the beginning of the week, the temperature was 100 degrees in Texas and Oklahoma, and the warm air was brought up here, Sebenste said. The 90 degree temperature in DeKalb was normal for that time of the month, he added.

The cool air that followed was from a jet stream which came down from Canada and brought the rain and clouds, he said.

Sebenste said windy, cool and rainy weather is typical for late October to early November and not for September.

“On average it does not get this cool,” he said.

Sebenste said the cool and rainy weather on Thursday was from Hurricane Gustav. He added the rain was heavier in the afternoon and ended by midnight with three to five inches of rainfall.

“Only minor flooding is expected because of the dry season,” Sebenste said. “August was drier than normal.”

Students felt the weather change was normal but annoying.

Jeff Paprocki, junior finance major, said the weather might be affected by global weather change.
“It’s typical summer weather and it could be global warming,” Paprocki said.

Ashley Butler, freshman marketing major, said the cold and the rain was ridiculous.

“Its awful to travel in since I live in Grant,” Butler said. “It’s a long walk, so since it rained it now felt longer.”

Sebenste said the forecast for the upcoming week and weekend will be cloudy with chances of rain. He added the temperature will be in the high to low 70s.
