Those who live in southeastern U.S. are not the only ones affected during hurricane season.
Hurricanes can raise the U.S.’s price for gas based on where they hit and how powerful they are.
NIU Transportation Manager Bill Finucane said the Gulf area is the worst spot for hurricanes to hit
concerning gas prices.
“Majority of the Gulf Coast has oil drilling platforms,” Finucane said. “And if a hurricane were to damage those platforms, gas prices will rise.”
He also added that Hurricane Gustav raised gas prices recently because of it’s anticipated impact.
“Gustav was not as hard as feared and prices are dropping because there was no disruption in the supply,” Finucane said.
NIU Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said Hurricane Ike could hit the Gulf in a day or two.
“Ike looks a little uncertain right now but it may reach the Gulf of Mexico tomorrow or Wednesday,” he said.
Finucane sees things differently and does not think Ike will affect gas prices.
“It looks like it’s heading southeast so it won’t be a problem, being away from the oil drills,” he said.
Dan Sherrill of DeKalb does not see much of a change in gas prices from Hurricane Ike.
“If there even is one, it will be temporary,” he said.
