Volleyball to face formidable UW-Milwaukee team
If the NIU volleyball team was looking for an example of how to play more consistently, they have a first-hand chance to tonight when they host Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Panthers (10-1) have won 10 consecutive matches, while the Huskies have struggled out of the gate with a 6-7 record. This is their first game back in DeKalb after going on a five-match road trip where the Huskies went 3-2.
Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Victor E. Court.
“UW-Milwaukee is probably the most consistent team we’ll play all year,” NIU head coach Ray Gooden said. “They do a great job at almost everything.”
Part of the reason the Cougars are a good all-around team is because they have well-rounded players who can do many things on the court.
UW-Milwaukee’s setter, senior Leanne Felsing, is averaging 6.86 assists per game, 3.53 kills and 3.56 digs, making her a threat from anywhere on the court.
“Felsing is a unique player,” Gooden said. “She can do everything and do it well.
They have hitters that can hit from anywhere on the court so that makes it tough to defend.”
The Cougars’ leading attacker is senior outside hitter Jamie Gabrielsen who is averaging 4.54 kills per game, while also adding 3.35 digs.
The Huskies are coming off a dominating win over Chicago State, which should give them some momentum coming into the match tonight. NIU got some help from junior middle blocker Katie Walsh who had a season-high 12 kills in the match.
“We’ve prided ourselves on not being a one- or two-person show,” Gooden said.
“We’re looking to get back to playing with more passion now. This will be a battle of who can outlast each other and win the long rallies.”
