With all the controversy surrounding Sarah Palin, the last thing she needs is a ’70s rock band being upset with her.

Unfortunately, this has been her current controversy after using Heart’s “Barracuda” as her unofficial theme song during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The idea for the use of the song stemmed from her high school nickname, “Sarah Barracuda,” given to her on the basketball court.

According to a statement on behalf of Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, the band was not asked permission for the use of their song, and the sisters say they would not have granted them permission even if asked. The Wilson sisters have sent the Republican Party a cease and desist letter asking them not to use this song.

The McCain campaign claims to have paid and obtained all the necessary licenses to use the song, and in all fairness, “Barracuda” is covered by a blanket fee that allows it to be used for public performance.

While the Wilson sisters are upset about the use of their song, Hearts former guitarist, Roger Fisher is seeing this issue in a whole different light.

Since the Republican Party is using their song, Heart is still receiving publicity and royalties. Also, Fisher believes that the Republicans are benefiting from an “ingenious placement of a kick-ass song.”

Fisher stated that he strongly endorses the Democratic ticket and said that he will be donating a portion of the royalties received from the use of “Barracuda” to the campaign of Sen. Barrack Obama.

“With my contribution to Obama’s campaign, the Republicans are now supporting Obama,” he said.

Do not expect Heart’s annoyance towards Palin to throw the election, but it is yet another item to add to the growing list of allegations towards her. Palin hasn’t exactly gotten off to the best start for the election year, but some hope that the missteps will blow over with time, leaving the McCain campaign a solid opponent to the Obama campaign.
