In the first home match of the season on Saturday, the NIU men’s rugby team dominated Lewis University by a score of 77-0. The win sends the Huskies’ record to 1-1 in non-conference play.

The man of the match for NIU was Shawn Evans, who contributed with four assists in the game.

“He’s a very solid player and a solid leader,” NIU mens rugby President Al Collins said. “He had an assist on the opening kick off and had four assists on the game. Everyone played a great game. We played very well as a team.”

The mens rugby team will be back in action at home on Saturday to face Loyola.

Last season the Huskies defeated Loyola on the last game of the season to knock them out of the conference championship. Game time will be 1 p.m. at the field behind the Stevenson parking lot.

“They’re a very tough team,” Collins said. “The last couple times we played them, they were very close games. They’re probably coming in here looking for revenge.”

Other club news:
• The NIU hockey team will travel to Kansas University on Friday to open up its season. The non-conference match will be at Ice Midwest. Head coach Jim Sullivan will make his debut for the Huskies, who went 11-22-1-1 last season.

• The NIU womens rugby team will also face Loyola on Saturday at home. It will be the first home match for the Huskies this season. Women’s rugby President Jen Studer expects Loyola to be a tough match for the Huskies, as they are consistently a top team in the conference.

• NIU paintball will host its final practice on Saturday before traveling to the University of Michigan Open on Sept. 27.
