'Spaceballs: The Animated Series' may have short life span

Decades after Mel Brooks created the sci-fi parody film “Spaceballs,” he has now brought us the unnecessary “Spaceballs: The Animated Series.”

According to Wired, gaming channel G4 debuted the new series acting as a sequel to the popular 80s film. Following in the footsteps of George Lucas’ reboot of “Star Wars” as an animated series, Brooks felt it was necessary to reboot the storyline, but was unable to get the help of all the original stars the second time around.

Actors Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman declined to participate in the reboot and John Candy has since passed away. Joan Rivers has agreed to reprise her role as the Dot Matrix, the wise cracking robot and Daphne Zuniga will return as the voice of Princess Vespa.

Creator Mel Brooks will also be lending his voice to the show for the roles he played including President Skroob and Yogurt, the cave dwelling creature known for his line: “May the Schwartz be with you!”

It’s hard to believe that the type of humor used in the two-decade old film could garner the same types of laughs that it did when it was first released.

Can Brooks’ humor carry over into a new generation? Only time will tell if this series will last, but the chances seem unlikely.
