No blockbuster scary movies this year

By DAVID MATZ

October is here. The leaves will be changing and horror films will soon grace box offices…or will they?

October is usually the month when all the production studios come out with their blockbuster horror movies. But while looking at the upcoming films for October, there are only three horror movies coming out in time for Halloween, and those are “The Haunting of Molly Hartley,” “Quarantine” and “Saw 5.”

First of all, “Saw 5?” Really? I thought the original was phenomenal and horrifying, even the sequel I found to be just as interesting and intense. But after releasing a new sequel every year for five years, this series has become heavily exhausted and boring. However, from the looks of the trailer, “The Haunting of Molly Hartley” seems slightly more than the average horror movie. It comes with a relatively unknown cast and has the standard plot of a girl who is being haunted by her mother and family’s secrets. It looks like a plausible source of terrifying entertainment on its premiere night of Halloween.

Classics like “Scream,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “The Exorcist” will be a better choice on the infamous night of Oct. 31. “Quarantine” looks to be the only horror movie that will induce a rapid heart rate at the box office. Premiering on Oct. 10, “Quarantine” looks to have all the qualities of a decent horror movie. The trailer emits a thrilling, spooky feeling when a group of people are locked in a building by the government while some kind of mutants run around and pick them off one by one.

But I am still left wondering, where is all the horror? I always looked forward to October for movies that makes me lose sleep, or contain an unusual plethora of knives, but I am disappointed by this year’s selection

I guess that production studios see October as a perfect chance to put out movies like the kid-friendly “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the Kevin Smith directed “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.”
I guess I will be relying on movie rentals to get my screams this Halloween.
