DeKalb Fire Department to host natural gas safety event

The DeKalb Fire Department will host an open house to help inform residents in an effort to keep homes safer throughout the community.

The open house will be at Fire Station 3, 950 W. Dresser Road, Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.
The event, which is held during Fire Prevention Week, will have several raffle prizes including 12 carbon monoxide detectors and a Lego Fire Station.

The fire department will display fire apparatuses along with its latter tower and airport crash rescue truck.

“We work really hard to work with partners in our community to keep your home safer,” said Bruce Harrison, Acting Fire Chief of DeKalb.

A representative from Nicor Gas will attend the event armed with scratch and sniff cards that will help children and adults be better able to identify the smell of natural gas. Examples of good and bad appliance connectors will also be shown.

Nicor Spokesperson Richard Caragol said to enter Nicor’s Lego Fire Station raffle, participants must answer questions about what they’ve learned about natural gas, such as what natural gas smells like.

“We encourage everyone to come out and participate in the fire department’s open house”, Caragol said.

ComEd will also be in attendance offering information about safety around power lines, said ComEd Spokesperson Paul Callighan.
