'Chocolate News' melts

In his new sketch comedy show “Chocolate News,” comedian David Alan Grier delivers several unsettling bits.

Grier begins by welcoming viewers saying, “This is the only source for pure, uncircumcised realness from an afro-centric perspective, and be it sports, politics or human interest, as long as there’s a ‘brotha’ involved, we cover it!”

So, clearly this show is aimed toward one demographic that I don’t exactly belong to, but I am able to spot comedy done right and that in no way includes any moment of this bust of a television show.

Several sketches feature Grier disguised in different costumes to play different characters a la “The Chappelle Show.”

Some of these characters included poet Maya Angelou and an overweight, fictional rapper named “Fatman” (original, I know). Neither of these skits seem to take off simply because of their repetitive and dragged-out style, not to mention a complete void of jokes.

As a whole, the show looks to be yet another Comedy Central show destined for the scrap pile.
“Chocolate News” premieres at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 on Comedy Central.
