Now that the city has a skating rink, do you plan to use it? |

This letter is in response to Jill Kozak’s Oct. 9 article on the media’s coverage of recent financial affairs. It is not impossible for average Americans to inform themselves about the worldwide financial situation currently unraveling right in front of us.
First of all, in terms of what “media” is and is not, the Northern Star is obviously not exempt from informing the public just because it is not a major publication (or whatever other reason may exist for blaming the other outlets considered as “media” for not informing the public). Regardless of what the media chooses to report, though, we all individually share responsibility to inform ourselves on the important matters at hand. Maybe the Northern Star could help lead that charge.
Now, it really does not require a business degree or countless hours of reviewing statistics to understand the basic concepts at work here (though later analysis of the statistics will support my claims). The entire story really does simply boil down to this: Government intervention in the market along with massive credit expansion engineered by the Federal has created this mess.
Therefore, the solution is not expanded government authority and even more inflation of the money supply. Yet, this is exactly what we get with the massive bailout bill (that ballooned to over 400 pages with even more spending appropriations added in the Senate).
Please don’t take my word for it, though. Far more renowned individuals such as Ludwig Von Mises, Murray Rothbard, F.A. Hayek, Henry Hazlitt, Lew Rockwell, Ron Paul and many others have been tirelessly analyzing and breathlessly warning about these irresponsible government policies for many years now. Don’t believe Congressman Barney Frank when he says that nobody saw this mess coming, because he works right alongside Congressman Paul! However, check out works by the above names. Works by the authors listed above are almost entirely available at the Founder’s Memorial Library. Other Web sites of interest would be www.lewrockwell.com and www.mises.org.
The information and solutions ARE out there for everybody to digest and understand whether or not the mainstream media and the empty suits in Washington want to put on their own thinking caps or not. Sure, this stuff may be harder to find as compared to simply turning on the network news, but since the Northern Star recognizes that mainstream media is not doing its job correctly, maybe it can help be a leader in fixing that problem and educating the public.
