Health Services workers frustrated over lack of...
"Back to the '80s" rocks the Egyptian Theatre
Blog: Thoughts on the news media

As I was walking to the library this morning at 8 a.m., I was thinking of a lot of things, such as my journalism law exam, my 10-page case study and, of course, HOMECOMING WEEK! While I was finishing my last sip of coffee, I looked ahead at the sidewalk chalk writings.
Maintaining my positive image of homecoming, I looked down and was startled by the statements that were displayed all across campus. “NIU health care workers are the lowest paid in the state.” This is NOT a message targeting homecoming and has nothing to do with the spirit of this celebration.
I do not know the pay statistics of our health care workers, and I do not have an opinion on the statements being made. I do, however, have an opinion on the negative message being displayed all over campus. I am a person who loves life, NIU and especially... our community.
For a second, my happy-go-lucky mood, usually generated by smiling faces, on campus was put on hold. I question the projection of these negative messages not only on homecoming week but as a whole. NIU is a community of pride, commitment and loyalty... We are a family!
Campus sidewalks should be used for positive images and statements, not one that will negatively contribute to our community’s homecoming spirit.
