For the first time all season, the NIU volleyball team will have a five-day break between games, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Huskies will have time to reexamine some things, coming off a loss at Bowling Green Saturday 3-0.

The loss knocks NIU to 0-2 in the MAC and 6-10 overall, while Falcons remain a perfect 2-0 in conference and 10-5 for the season.

NIU freshman Meagan Schoenrock led all players with 16 kills, but, unfortunately for the Huskies, she was the only member in double-digits.

Bowling Green, on the other hand, was consistent with three players reaching that mark. Sophomore Corey Domek and junior Meghan Mohr led the way with 12 kills each, while senior Kendra Halm added 10.

Many of NIU’s problems stemmed from the Falcon’s serving game, which kept NIU’s defense on its toes.

“We knew Bowling Green was an aggressive serving team,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said. “They scored some points with their serves and really took us out of our game with their serves and transition scoring early on.”

While the first two games weren’t very close, the third saw many ties and lead changes.

When it looked like Bowling Green was going to run away with it, up 26-23, NIU went on a timely 5-2 run to tie at 28.

That is as close as the Huskies would get, as a block by Bowling Green ended the Huskies’ chance for a comeback. In that game, Schoenrock posted a career-high 12 kills.

“We knew they were an experienced team and that showed tonight,” Gooden said. “We have a good week to train and we are excited about that.”
