Fire safety: Tips from the DeKalb Fire Department
By Northern Star staff

Flood conditions can create fire and shock hazards in the home, said Bruce Harrison, assistant chief of the DeKalb Fire Department, in a press release Friday.

Harrison warned that pools of water and appliances exposed to water may be electrically charged and therefore electrical fire hazards.

All wires may be electrically charged, including cable TV feeds, which could present shock hazards, Harrison said.

Before restoring power to a house, residents should remove standing water and wet carpets, dry the home with good ventilation and have a licensed electrician inspect the home for damage, Harrison said.

If residents notice downed utility lines, they should report the problem to the utility company or emergency services, Harrison said.
