The DeKalb Community Ice Skating Rink opening has been rescheduled to Nov. 27.

The City of DeKalb and Re:New DeKalb, Inc. prepared for the installation of the DeKalb Community Ice Rink last week. The site was leveled and the fencing, restrooms, skate rental facility, temporary trees and other site preparations were made.

However, the site for the DeKalb Community Ice Skating Rink became saturated following last week’s heavy rains.

“The soils were wet, and they weren’t stable, so we need to let them dry out,” said Public Works Director Rick Monas.

City officials determined that the rink’s opening would need to be delayed to allow the rink’s subsurface to dry properly. The rink was scheduled to open Nov. 22 but will now open Nov. 27.

“While we regret making the public wait an additional week, we want to ensure that we are installing the rink on an optimal surface that will maximize the skating experience,” Monas said.

The rink will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 2 to 5 p.m. and remain open throughout the winter season. The Grand Opening Celebration will now be held on Dec. 7 from noon to 6 p.m.

Skating classes and special events will not be affected by the delayed opening, including the free “Skate with Santa” session Dec. 6 from noon to 2 p.m.
