Cavel halted by U.S. appeal's court

Yet another chapter has emerged in the saga of Cavel International Inc.

The last American horse slaughtering facility has stopped operating again after the latest in a tangled series of legal decisions. A United States appeals court’s three-judge panel has upheld a law banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

At the moment, Cavel has the option to either ask the panel to reconsider its judgement or request a full 14-member court to hear the case. This option expires on Oct. 7, at which point the company’s only recourse will be to appeal to the United States Supreme Court.

Phil Calabrese, Cavel’s attorney, said the company has yet to decide on its course of action.

“We have 90 days before we need to appeal to the Supreme Court, so we’ve got some time,” Calabrese said.
