DeKalb and the northern Illinois area saw their first significant snowfall of the season Sunday as The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning.

The warning expired at noon today.

The NIU campus was open today and classes were held as normal, the NIU Web site reported at 10 p.m. Sunday. Sidewalks around campus remained slippery due to the salt shortage.

A mixture of rain and snow formed over the area Sunday morning and changed to solid snow by Sunday afternoon before tapering off early this morning.

Total snow accumulation was expected to reach six to eight inches.

Today’s forecast high is 28 degrees with a low of 14 degrees.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 33 degrees. The next snowfall is forecast to take place Wednesday.

Students, faculty, and staff are urged to use caution traveling to the campus area and should exercise personal judgment with respect to winter weather driving conditions, according to the NIU Web site.
