One fatal accident and about 40 other accidents were reported due to weather conditions after Sunday’s snow storms.

From 5 p.m. Sunday to 12:15 p.m. Monday, about four accidents with injuries, 37 accidents with property damage and 100 reports of vehicles going off the road were reported, said DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott.

At least one person was killed in a fatal accident around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Peace Road and Fairview Drive, when a southbound driver lost control of the vehicle and slid into the northbound lane, striking a semi-truck, Scott said.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, only one fatality was reported in the accident and the name has not been released.

Three other people in the southbound vehicle were taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, and the victims could not be moved by helicopter because of weather conditions, said DeKalb Fire Chief Bruce Harrison.

“We always expect a lot of accidents on the first snow,” Harrison said. “The most important thing with this kind of weather is just to slow down.”

The county received high snowfall and winds which made driving conditions treacherous, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office news release, and drivers are encouraged to drive cautiously or avoid driving during winter weather.
