NIU Police are advising people to exercise caution in their travel on and around campus after an attempted robbery by an assailant claiming to be armed.

The incident took place at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Annie Glidden Road near the University Plaza Apartments. The robber approached the victim, claimed to have a weapon (but did not display it) and demanded money.

Reports of a similar incident the next day on NIU’s West Campus have proven to be unfounded.

NIU Police are advising people to take extra precautions while traveling on foot and suggesting that they be aware of, and cautious around, individuals who seem to be hiding their face or otherwise acting suspiciously.

Police are urging people not to walk alone and to avoid poorly lit areas. They suggest that students take advantage of the department’s Late Night Ride Service from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. by calling (815) 753-2222. Anyone can request “Walk Along” service from the department’s Huskie Patrol between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. by calling (815) 753-9658.

This person is either extremely smart, or extremely stupid to be robbing people in the middle of the day on a semi-busy campus. Not sure which one would scare me more.

Maybe I haven't gotten one yet, but isn't the school supposed to send out mass e-mails about the campus alerts?

I was under the impression text messages would be used in situations like these... I happened to be talking to a professor who mentioned this to me.. otherwise I would've been in the dark... good job of disseminating information NIU.... :-/
