CHICAGO (AP) — Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn says he'd hoped embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich would resign after the Illinois House's impeachment vote.
Quinn held a news conference in Chicago on Friday, just minutes after a defiant Blagojevich told reporters that the 114-1 House vote was the result of his long-standing disputes with lawmakers.
The lieutenant governor says it's now important for the Senate to handle Blagojevich's trial with a sense of "solemn responsibly" and he's confident that will happen.
The vote by the Illinois House sets up a trial in the Senate. If convicted there, Blagojevich would be removed from office and Quinn would take over.
Blagojevich is facing federal charges that accuse him of scheming to sell off President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat. He's denied any wrongdoing.
