Rust did not accumulate on the NIU women’s track and field team over break.

The Huskies dominated at Saturday’s Carthage Opener at Carthage College. NIU finished in first place with 212 points, ahead of Carthage College (145) and UW-Parkside (39).

“I think their dedication is impeccable,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. “At this level of competition, even when you’ve got a break from academics and we come back and compete, they’ve got to stay on their workout regime that the coaching staff has given them.”

Chanel Kellyman’s performance in the 55- and 200-meter dashes stood out for the Huskies. Kellyman grabbed first place in both events, including her two one-hundreth of a second victory over fellow teammate Kaylee Walters in the 55-meter dash.

“Chanel is very talented; she hasn’t even reached her potential at this time,” Teaberry said. “This is just a prelude into what she can do.”

The relay team also played a large part in the Huskies’ victory. The runners took first in the 4x200-meter relay along with the 4x400-meter relay.

“They workout very hard,” said Teaberry. “That’s the one time where you know you have three other girls depending on you to get it done, and I think they all respect each other very well to know that when they step on that line in the relay that they need to represent NIU in the highest fashion.”

Sophomore Rasheta Butler was also another NIU member to cross the finish line first with a time of 1:00:67 in the 400-meter dash.

NIU continued its domination off the track as well.

Junior Britt Houghton finished in first place with 17-11.50 feet in the long jump and 36-10.50 feet in the triple jump. Freshman Jenner Sio and senior Shoshanna Brown ended just behind Houghton at second and third place in both events respectively.

Senior Jennene Anthony and junior Cora Caulfield showed off their strength as Anthony grabbed first in the weight throw (50-08.75) and second in the shot put (39-05.75). Caulfield did not do as well in the weight throw, finishing in fifth, but with a toss of 42-06.25 feet, she won first place in the shot put.

Junior Jess Statler also came out on top for the Huskies in the high jump with a jump of 5-05.75 feet.
