Now that the city has a skating rink, do you plan to use it? |

The proposed keg permit system is flawed. I find it surprising that the DCP and SAFE are endorsing the idea. The only thing the policy achieves is an incentive for party-throwers to switch from kegs to cases.
I do, however, applaud their noble intentions. The permit essentially increases the cost of a keg party significantly, but only increases the cost of a party with that much beer by $11.
A keg of cheap beer, excluding the initial deposits for the tap, barrel, cups, and ice, is $55. Kegs contain 1,984 oz, which is 5.51 30-pack cases of beer. The amount of beer in a keg, bought in cases, is only $66 at $11.99 per case.
With the other costs of a keg taken into account, it is amazing that people actually use them. So what should the party-thrower do, especially if this law passes? They should have “case parties” instead. I am aware that it doesn’t have the ring of a “keg party” but perhaps it will catch on.
What should the liquor commission do? It should not impose unnecessary costs on DeKalb residents and businesses. Finally, what should the underage drinkers do? Go to parties because even if the ordinance passes nothing will change for you.
