October is Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) History Month, and many are actively working to keep students informed and involved.

The LGBT Resource Center has planned a month of events to support gay students on campus.

“We’ve got a really full calendar this year,” said Philip Engleking, staff member of the LGBT resource center.

One of the key events, “Sharing Our Stories,” is an informative event for people looking to learn more about the LGBT community, said Engleking.

“It’s a speaker panel. We have a speaker’s bureau out of the office, and it’ll basically be a discussion panel with a handful of people just answering audience questions,” Engleking said.

The event takes place Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center, Room 505.
“Sharing Our Stories” is the first gay-oriented event to be held on campus, but not the last.
National Coming Out Day, a day where LGBT youths are encouraged to “come out,” is Oct. 11.

“We’re doing a sticker campaign and providing a Web site with names of people who are out and proud — basically a list of people who want to put their names out there as being supportive,” Engleking said.

Engleking said stickers for the campaign are available in the LGBT Resource Center at any time.

Britani Holmes, a freshman Spanish major, said she is looking forward to LGBT month.

“There are a lot of events that sound really interesting,” Holmes said. “I’m definitely going to a few of them.”
