The DeKalb School Board District 428 was updated Monday on district-wide construction.

“We’ve made a lot of progress,” said Gary Gustafson, construction liaison to the school.

Gustafson went on to say concrete flooring in the classrooms of Cortland Elementary School are nearly complete and the project is on schedule.

Gustafson said he expected the steel for the building to be set by Feb. 16th.

“After that, the building will start taking shape and really pick up the pace.” Gustafson said.

He said the building is approximately 27 percent complete.

Gustafson said the documents for potential construction bidders for the new DeKalb High School are still being prepared and said he hoped to have them ready for bidding by late February or early March. The plans for the new high school were approved by the board on Jan. 20.
Gustafson said the site configuration is still being tweaked, but if all goes as planned, they should be ready to break ground in early April.

The board also approved an order change for Cortland Elementary School. Gustafson and his team are required to have the board approve any order changes that exceed $25,000.

The order consisted of removal and replacement of dirt under the parking lots when the testing companies found some poor soil, Gustafson said.

The change was done before it was brought to the board, Gustafson said, because the bad soil was found the day before they were ready to pave.

“We are suppose to approve things over $25,000, and then it’s suppose to be done,” said board member James Mitchell. “They can’t work like that all the time, I understand that, but if they are going to do it, I hope they can inform us without violating any policy.”
