The Rant

On Sunday, Michael Phelps confirmed that a picture of him inhaling through a marijuana pipe in a British tabloid was real, and he apologized to his fans.

Maybe he should think about apologizing to his sponsors first, though. America’s golden boy could face significant financial fallout from this little incident. Then again, who’s to say that with his marketability, his sponsors won’t just try to ride this out? Maybe Speedo could come out with a new, sleeker style of bong, and who wouldn’t love to watch a Rosetta Stone ad about how to say “ganja” in seven different languages?

I honestly can’t believe that I’m the only one who saw this coming. In the thick of the Olympic coverage, NBC outlined Phelps’ daily 12,000 calorie training diet. Did anyone really believe he could eat all that food without some help? Even though he’s never tested positive for banned substances, this little snafu could just provide some insight into Phelps’ training regimen.
