Losing a senator, completing the Supreme Court and paying respects to NIU were among the affairs of Sunday’s Student Association meeting.

After gaining two senators at last week’s meeting, the SA found itself losing another at this week’s meeting when Senator Aaron Brooks announced his resignation.

“I feel that this forum is not right for the agenda I want to progress,” Brooks said in his announcement. “I hope you all understand my decision on how I can best serve this university elsewhere and accept my resignation.”

The SA is also nearing the loss of more senators as their attendance rates have not met the SA requirements. Their absences are being investigated by the SA before they may be expelled.

Brooks’ departure from the senate brought that night’s attendance down to 23 out of 37 senators.

While a senator left the ranks of the SA Senate, the SA Supreme Court welcomed the fifth and final justice to its ranks.

Juan Ponce de Leon, a third-year law student, was unanimously approved by the SA to take the fifth seat among the SA Supreme Court justices.

After a weekend of remembering those lost to the shootings of Feb. 14, the SA passed a resolution of remembrance to recognize and respect, as a group, the efforts of NIU in the wake of the tragedy.

“I think the resolution is a very symbolic and important message for us to show how united this community is and how we learned from everything as a group,” said Speaker of the Senate Matthew Venaas.

In addition, the SA had unanimously approved the student organization LAN@NIU. The group is a computer gaming organization that has met in the basement of Douglas Hall every weekend for two years and combines academic assistance among its members.

“It’s nice to have the recognition that will come with the approval since we can now expand our own horizon, now that we have larger venues available to us,” said Matt Reiner, a senior computer science major and president of LAN@NIU.

With SA executive elections approaching next month, the SA elections commission is processing applications, and a list of candidates will be released this week. Candidates will begin campaigning thereafter.
