When disaster strikes communities unite. We find generosity that eludes us during our daily lives. DeKalb is a true community with good people. Recent events have proven that fact.

It is a sad truth that we are fascinated by horrific tragedies. We fixate on troubling story lines that develop over days. We consume more news than we ever do when stories irk us.

This is how the evolving nature of news coverage shows its incredible value. Waiting until the next day’s paper to post closures and instruct many how to act.

Then, after we are sickened by the destruction most of us react.

Looking at the need for help people stepped up.

Many giving hearts filled up sandbags. Professionals did their job to the best of their ability. Policemen and firemen worked double shifts. The Greek community, strengthened by other non-affiliated students, worked side by side with citizens. Our often divided town became a communiversity.

Many complain that DeKalb is a place to leave and not to stay. This is a great town full of good souls regardless of age.

I was honestly frustrated with the forceful lady hoarding us into the CAB office at the Campus Life Building. That was childish though, she was trying to protect others. We should respect those trying help us however hard it may be.

This situation shows us how helpful it can be to know a neighbor, know your representative.
