Professor pleased with traffic congestion

This is an unusual letter.

I am writing to say how delighted I am that I have had trouble finding a parking spot on campus the past couple of weeks.

Usually, letters about parking are angry rants, but mine isn’t. The twist is that I am not writing about car parking, but bikes.

I work in Davis Hall, and for the past few weeks all the bike racks have been full unless I get there early in the morning. I have been driven (no pun intended) to cabling my bike to lamp posts or pylons.

It’s great to see students and colleagues using their bodies to get around, rather than using machines that burn fossil fuels.

My hat is off to all the bicyclers and pedestrians around campus. Keep it up, and maybe pedestrian areas will expand and we will get some more racks planted on the east end of NIU.
