After a stretch of three straight home matches, the NIU women’s tennis team traveled to Chicago where it dropped a 5-2 decision against Illinois-Chicago.

On Saturday, the Huskies (3-4) were propelled by senior Nao Umemura and freshman Emily Rogers. Umemura won in No. 4 singles while Rogers took the No. 5 singles 7-6, 7-5 for her fourth straight singles win.

In No. 1 singles, senior Lilian Asuaje fell 6-2, 6-1 to the Flame’s Ilinca Cristescu. Sophomore Kathryn Friedlund lost in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2 while fellow sophomore Martina Schnapp dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision in No. 3 singles.

NIU was no match for UIC’s doubles play either as the Huskies lost all three bouts.
The Huskies’ next match will take place this Friday against Bradley at 1 p.m.

Women’s soccer

The Huskies traveled to Champaign on Saturday for the University of Illinois 7v7 Tournament.

The 10 teams, which included two from NIU, three from Illinois, two from IUPUI, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and Louisville, were split into two groups, and the two top teams from each group would play in the semifinals.

Both NIU-red and NIU-black won three of the four group matches and advanced to the semifinals. NIU-black lost to Illinois-navy 11-2, and NIU-red lost 4-3 to Illinois-orange.

The Huskies will next play three matches on March 28 against Lewis, NIU alumnae and UW-Parkside at home.
