Tristen DeShazer came into the NCAA Championships with 15 pins on the season. On Thursday, the redshirt sophomore recorded his 16th pin and 21st win on the season over North Carolina State’s freshman Darius Little.

DeShazer was taken down but reversed it into a headlock and pinned Little at the 2:32 mark in the first round of the match.

In his second match of the night, DeShazer took on Daniel Dennis of Iowa. DeShazer started the match-up 5-2. The Hawkeye, however, came back to earn a 9-6 win over the Huskies.

Bryan Deutsch’s first round match did not turn out the same. Deutsch lost a 5-4 decision to Iowa State’s Cyler Sanderson. Sanderson’s brother, Cyclones wrestling coach Cael Sanderson, was an undefeated, four-time NCAA Champion at Iowa State from 1998-2002 and is also a gold medal winner.

Deutsch came out as the more aggressive wrestler, recording two points on an early takedown, but could not keep it rolling.
