Altgeld Hall will host three new exhibits from today through Saturday, Oct. 13.

The first show, “Body Politic,” is curated by Peter Olsen, the assistant director of NIU’s art museum. The exhibit is expected to showcase six different artists. Moreover, “Body Politic” is inspired by themes such as body image, decoration, consciousness and politics.

“Body Politic” includes interactive pieces such as Jennifer Yorke’s “Bombshell,” making the exhibit more hands on than a typical art exhibit.
The second exhibit on display is “Some Enchanting Evening: 100 Years of Evening Gowns: (1900-1999).”

This local collection, privately collected by Barbara Cole Peters (wife of NIU President John Peters) promises an interesting view of changing fashions throughout the course of time.
Peters will introduce the exhibit herself. The display is said to express differences in personal identity, artistic expression and social change.

“Dafatir: Contemporary Iraqi Book Art,” originally from the University of North Texas, is the third exhibit on display. This piece, which was collected by Iraqi scholars, is a private collection that includes print ranging from a wide variety of different artists.

NIU art museum director Jo Burke believes more students should take advantage of the opportunity to visit the museum.

“We have an art museum here on campus, and it’s free, with interesting programs,” Burke said. “People can learn from the visual arts.”

The NIU art museum gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
