The economy is causing many local car dealerships to experience varied car sales.

“Sales are pretty much steady all year around,” said Tim Flahaven, sales representative for Brian Bemis Toyota and Scion, 1890 Sycamore Road.

Flahaven said there really is not too big of an increase in used car sales, but there has been an increase in new car sales.

“We’re selling more new cars than used cars,” he said. “Toyotas are selling, especially right now when the economy is bad because people are watching how they spend their money, and they are good on gas mileage.”

For other car dealerships, used car sales are a bit higher than new car sales.

“Used cars are selling pretty good,” said Tony Hoecherl, sales associate for Mike Mooney Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Pontiac, Inc., 204 N. Fourth St. “I would say more used cars are being sold over new cars.”

Hoecherl said in terms of used cars, used trucks are especially selling right now.
“You can hardly find those,” he said.

Bob Ziegler, owner of Covenant Motors, 354 N. Main St. in Sycamore, said if you went to a dealer auction, you would never think there was a problem with the economy right now.

“As far as dealers buying vehicles wholesale, prices are high right now with the combination of shortage of supply, and we’re getting into the car-buying season,” he said.

Ziegler said nonetheless, there are still more people looking for used cars.

“They are always popular,” he said. “But there are not as many in supply right now.”
