NIU alumnus calls for change in the upcoming local election

DeKalb will hold its consolidated municipal election on Tuesday, April 7, and I’d like to encourage every NIU student to vote! We will have a unique opportunity to raise the bar with respect to those who represent us at City Hall.

This past year, the economy has tanked and many jobs have been lost. The NIU community is suffering in the pocketbook! Unfortunately, our acting mayor and incumbent aldermen are not getting the message. We can change that. Let’s review some of the highlights of Acting Mayor Povlsen and City Council over the past year:

-Raised your Sales Tax to 8 percent. DeKalb now has the highest sales tax in the county

-Increased the restaurant tax twice in 2008 (to 10.5 percent effective mid/late 2009)

-Tacked on an extra two cent tax per gallon of gasoline (in addition to the increased sales tax mentioned above)

-Spent $1.8 million dollars to repave a parking lot

Tax tax tax! Acting Mayor Povlsen seems to believe that NIU students are made out of money!

DeKalb can do better! Reviewing the candidates who are running, I am proud to see that the following candidates are committed to honest government and will give DeKalb the positive change it needs:

Mayoral Candidate: Lynn Fazekas

4th Ward Alderman candidate: John Anderson

6th Ward Alderman Candidate: Craig Roman

Please Vote on April 7th!
