The DeKalb Plan Commission has approved the Evans Scholars Rooming House rezoning and planned development plan.

This comes after Evans Scholars Foundation was to appear in front of the plan commission during their Feb. 8 meeting but withdrew their application.

Jay Jazors, chairman of the chapter house of Evans Scholars Foundation, said the application they resubmitted was more cohesive from a land-use point of view.

“Their proposal is to raze the current house and live in the Theta Kappa Epsilon house until the new house is complete,” said city planner Derek Hiland.

Once the new Evans Scholar House, 901 Greenbrier Road, is complete, the TKE house, 907 Greenbrier Road, will be razed to make room for a new parking lot Hiland said.

“The facility they have now is not adequate,” said David Shaw, the attorney for the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Jazors is looking toward adding new students to the foundation.

“We want to have more kids going to school,” Jazors said.

Jazors said that starting from scratch would be easier than trying to add on to an older structure.
In the proposal, the new Evans Scholar House will be able to hold 61 residents and have 31 parking spots, an increase from .31 spaces per resident to .51 spaces per resident.

The pros of the plan are that they will be decreasing density by 30 people, the parking per resident will increase and there is now private development coming to the Greek Row area, Hiland said.

The plan will now go in front of the city council for final approval.
