One small picture from a student, yet one giant leap for self-expression.
Since February, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center has been working on an ever-changing and expanding piece of art.
The project that originally began as a mural for the LGBT Resource Center has become a 6-foot by 4-foot collage that anyone can add to, said Margie Cook, director of the LGBT Resource Center.
Students are allowed to design and decorate a postcard-sized piece of paper attached to steel sheets by magnets. When completed, the project will be a collage of self-expression and pride to the many who contributed.
“The main theme of this project is to reflect the LGBT community experience through pride, empowerment and community,” Cook said.
Everyone is encouraged to add to the collage whether they are a student, faculty or staff member, Cook said.

“The idea of contributing was very important to me,” said senior sociology major Phil Engleking as he looked over his latest addition to the collage.

The project originally began with the help of Ed Check, an LGBT friend, in February. He provided the steel sheets used in the collage.

The LGBT Resource Center plans to continue adding to the project over time so that it is always changing.

“I’m really excited to see the way this piece evolves over time. In 15 years, I could see it being so eclectic, with work from old and new students,” Engleking said.
