Billy ‘The Kid’ Harris was tabbed in 1998 as “The Best Playground Baller Ever” by Slam magazine. Before that, Harris was making his way through NIU basketball records.

Harris is currently No. 3 on the NIU’s all-time scoring list with 1,331 points. He was also named to the All-Time Chick Evans Field House team in 1997.

He holds the NIU mark for back-to-back scoring games with 35 versus Long Beach State and 42 versus Virginia Commonwealth in 1972-1973.

Harris was a member of the Huskie team that upset No. 5 Indiana and also made its way into the Associated Press Top 20. Harris posted 32 points against Indiana as a sophomore.

Harris was eventually the second NBA Draft Pick to come out of NIU following Jim Smith. Boston Celtics Hall of Fame head coach Red Auerbach personally scouted Harris but he was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the seventh round.
