Johnny B. Johnson was known around the NCAA Championships with his signature “supplay” move.
Johnson was a runner up in the NCAAs in 1972-1973 with a 28-2-0 record for head coach Don Flavin.
Even though he lost the match, Johnson’s supplay in the title match with Greg Strobel of Oregon State is regarded as one of the best moves in NCAA Championship history.
He defeated Tampa’s Fletcher Carr and Iowa State’s Al Nacin to reach the title bout with Strobel.
The performance earned him Division-I All-American status.
His career record was 54-15-0 and was the co-MVP in 1972-1973.
Along with his brother, Larry, the tandem placed 13th at the NCAAs with 19 team points.
