NIU students will raise their voices Wednesday evening at the Convocation
Center when competing teams from different student organizations come together to “Yell Like Hell.”
The “Yell Like Hell” competition is one of many hosted by the Campus Activities Board for Homecoming Week and has been a homecoming tradition since 1973.
“The event is to raise Huskie spirits and really get the students ready for the homecoming game; one might think of it as a pep rally,” said Colleen Murphy, senior communications major and president of CAB.
Eleven teams will compete by organizing and choreographing a pep routine that incorporates the year’s Homecoming theme, which is “Choose Huskie Tradition.” These routines include dancing, stunts, uniforms/costumes and anything within the rules to express NIU school spirit.
Each team can earn up to 60 points, but will be judged on aspects such as the creativity and originality of their routine, choreography, the effectiveness of their actions and of course their yell that must ring with NIU pride.
“I think it’s a good thing for everyone, it’s very exciting, and I love to compete. We hope to win first, but we’re really just looking to have fun,” said Nicole Dones, a senior hospitality administration major who is performing this year with Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, which placed second last year.
Each routine can only go on for a maximum of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The entire event will last about two hours.
It is expected that about 300 people will attend. NIU football players and cheerleaders will also be in attendance.
“Yell Like Hell is a great way to get pumped for Saturday’s game as well as a great chance to watch some really competitive cheerleading,” Murphy said.
Following the event will be the Banner Contest judging, in which each competing team’s banner created for Homecoming Week will be judged for more points to be given to each team.
"Yell Like Hell" will be held Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the Convocation Center.
