Rainstorms didn’t keep the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity from victory on Saturday at the 2009 Tugs Competition. After 40 years of tradition, the Pikes maintain their leading status with a 31-9 record.

Mike Bauer, president of the Interfraternity Council and member of the Pike tug team, said he is happy to help bring the rope back onto Pike territory after a dark era of defeat from 2003-2007.

“This was the fastest match in years; we took the rope from the Phi Sigs in only seven minutes,” Bauer said. “Last year, we won the match in 10 [minutes], which is still pretty fast so they didn’t stand much of a chance this year.”

Following the championship match, an altercation almost broke out between the two teams. Bauer said the dispute ended before it escalated.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon took the third place bracket in the match against Sigma Nu. Brad Greenberg, senior corporate communications major and coach for the SAE team, said they had been practicing since winter break in every weather condition.

“The tug competition is beneficial for all of the fraternities because it’s a demonstration of commitment and hard work,” Greenberg said. “Everyone was very well prepared for the final bracket so it went smoothly.”

Senior finance major Alex Zerin said he looks forward to this charity fundraiser every year.
“Tugs brings everyone together; it’s a great chance to catch up with visiting alumni,” Zerin said.
“It’s also a great way to introduce the incoming rush to some of the better aspects of Greek life.”

All of the money raised by tugs will go to charity, but Bauer said the specific charity will be chosen at the next IFC meeting.
