An NIU student is believed to have swine flu, according to an NIU press release.

University officials have been notified by the DeKalb County Health Department that a probable (but not confirmed) case of H1N1 (swine) flu in DeKalb County involves an NIU student.

The student does not reside on campus, has not attended class since April 24, and has not participated in extracurricular activities on campus since the onset of the symptoms, according to the release. The student, identified only as a 30-year-old male, was not hospitalized and is recovering, according to the release.

The health department has concluded that because the student remained voluntarily isolated during most of the contagious period, no significant exposure of other students occurred on campus.

Only a small number of NIU employees are believe to have been exposed to the student during the contagious period; all of the employees have been informed, and none have reported any symptoms associated with the swine flu.

All NIU facilities are open and operations are proceeding as normal, according to the release.
