A man charged in the beating death of a 25–year–old Elgin man in the Reilly’s parking lot in 2007 is back in jail within a month of being on work release.

Former NIU student Nathan Schrank, 24, violated the terms of his work release and will spend the next six months confined to jail, Assistant State’s Attorney Bill Engerman said.

In April 2007, Luis Noriega, a Kishwaukee Community College Student and Varsity Soccer Coach at Indian Creek High School in Shabonna, was beaten to death after leaving Reilly’s Bar and Eatery, 1215 Blackhawk Road, as reported in a Northern Star article on Nov. 11, 2008.
Schrank and his friends Christopher Tadder and Fred J. Jakob attacked Noriega because Schrank’s girlfriend Emily Hobbs complained that Noriega had cut in front of her in line at the bar.

Under work release, Schrank was allowed to leave the jail to go to work and was required to go back to jail after finishing work, Engerman said.

“Information developed that [Schrank] was where he wasn’t supposed to be,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott.

The Sheriff’s Department found that Schrank went to dinner at his employer’s home after work, Engerman said. The Sheriff’s Department followed up on the information and brought Schrank back to court, Scott said.

Schrank was charged with aggravated battery and manslaughter in January, according to a Northern Star article.

His sentence included 180 days in jail for the aggravated battery charge, which he completed as of May 2, Engerman said. Schrank was also sentenced to 365 days of work release, six months of home monitoring and 30 months probation for the manslaughter charge, Engerman said.
Schrank is being held in DeKalb County Jail until his court assigned release date on Nov. 17, Scott said.
