NIU is hosting a free screening of a documentary about Indonesian genocide Monday. The public is invited to view “40 Years of Silence: An Indonesian Tragedy,” from director Robert Lemelson, a UCLA anthropologist.
The film is a “story of four families who survived the mass killings that happened in Indonesia in 1965 and 1966,” Lemelson said.
He started gathering materials and information in 2002 and worked for several years perfecting the film.
“You actually get to see one [young man] grow up. We began when he was age 12 and see him at age 17 at the end,” Lemelson said.
The film will be shown Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center Heritage Room. Lemelson will be present immediately following the showing for a question and answer session.
