With the fall semester under way, NIU students will not only be looking forward to getting started with their classes, but also signing up for recreational activities.
Recreation Services Director Sandi Carlisle noted that overall the interest from the students is very high each year.
“A lot of students come in and it’s very, very busy,” Carlisle said.
Recently, the university recreation services also has made it much easier for students to register for intramural sports by allowing them to sign up for leagues at home via the Internet.
Rather than making a hassle of having students coming in and make a trip to the center, registering online will simplify students’ sign-up.
Overall, there are five program areas: open recreation, intramural sports, sports clubs, outdoor adventure and fitness and wellness.
Also, within their instructional fitness department, recreation services has added three new classes including Hip Hop Jam, Zumba (a class where fitness meets Latin dance), and Yoga
Essentials to integrate dancing and fitness.
Students can sign up for intramural sports in men’s, women’s and co-rec leagues. Those leagues can either be recreational or competitive.
Those looking more to go out and enjoy their respective sport would be more inclined to sign up for the recreational league rather than the competitive.
Leagues in the intramural sports include 16-inch softball, flag football and indoor soccer.
Football fanatics can sign up for fantasy football and pro football pick ‘em, both of which are still open for students.
Carlisle and staff feel the additional information online will make signing up and finding updates easier for students.
