Police auction lost, stolen items

Thrifty students looking for deals in DeKalb may find some steals this weekend – literally.

The NIU Police Department is holding its annual auction Saturday, Aug. 29. The auction will be held on the east side of Huskie Stadium under the student bleachers.

Illinois state law mandates that unclaimed items from police evidence and lost and found be auctioned off. This year’s auction features pricey items such as I-Pods, 16 Texas Instrument calculators and an authenticated Rolex watch. Numerous other items, such as jewelry, books, backpacks, DVD’s, CD’s and 25 bicycles will be up for auction, according to Judi Glover of the
Department of Public Safety.

“We have everything from power tools to umbrellas, and they are all in decent shape,” Glover said.

There are no entrance fees for the auction. Those wishing to participate simply need to show up at 9 a.m. to register for a bid number. The live auction will begin at 10 a.m.

All proceeds from the auction will go to the NIU general revenue fund.

“The general fund is used to pay for things like salaries, office supplies and travel,” said Melanie Magara, assistant vice president NIU Public Affairs.

Those looking to attend the auction should stop at an ATM beforehand, Glover advises.

“We are not able to accept credit or debit cards at the auction,” she said. “Cash or check will do.”
