This year marks the 7th annual Tribute to Heroes award, hosted by the DeKalb County Boy Scouts of America.
“The Tribute to Heroes committee is always seeking ‘hero’ nominees,” said Cliff Golden, DeKalb’s Troop 33 Scoutmaster and 2006 former recipient of Tribute to Heroes. “This year we will honor four DeKalb County residents. An individual can be nominated if he or she has ‘unselfishly dedicated themselves to community service, and most especially, to the welfare and development of its youth.’”
The four recipients this year are Yvonne Johnson, Don Stahl, Virginia Larsen and Roger and Marcia Scott.
“We honor ‘local individuals for Heroic Actions and/or Exceptional, Selfless Community Service,’” said Mary Beth Wilfong, senior executive for Boy Scouts of America, Kishwaukee District.
Wilfong gathers nominations sent to her throughout the year, and then takes the nominations to a committee comprised of 12 people from around DeKalb County. The committee then carefully reads over the nominations and chooses the recipients.
“The Scouts will welcome guests, distribute literature and tokens, plus one boy will sit at each table so those attending will have direct contact with a Scout, providing a richer and more personal understanding of what the scouting program is all about,” Golden said.
The ceremony will also include a presentation of the colors by local veterans and Boy Scouts from Troop 33, as well as a presentation of the award and speeches made by the recipients, among other things.
“This evening is a feel-good event where we can honor people in DeKalb County for their contributions to the residents. These recipients give of themselves so that others in DeKalb County can benefit. They are the people that we look up to and strive to be like; they are the heroes in DeKalb,” Wilfong said.
