Inevitably, the rolled ankle is typically the most common sports injury for students who participate in intramural sports at the Campus Recreation Center.
Senior Pat Marek, who played soccer at the Rec center last year, noted on a few occasions, when either himself or his teammates would run into an injury, the staff was consistent in providing aid if necessary.
“At the front desk, they had ice packs and there was usually someone up there who could come over and help you if needed,” Marek said.
Although Jon Higdon, graduate assistant of intramural sports, has only been on staff since last August, he did run into a situation last year when a male student was playing basketball and went up for a lay-up and came down awkward and ended up tearing his ACL.
“We immediately called campus because campus is going to be able to get through the appropriate service,” Hidgon said.
In the event of a serious injury, the Rec center staff has the training and credentials to address a situation.
“All of our supervisor staff are first aid and CPR certified, but they don’t necessarily practice that, though we usually call the proper authorities,” Higdon said.
Fortunately, nothing life–threatening has occurred at the Rec center. However, in the event something did, Higdon and his staff would be prepared to tackle the condition.
“Anything serious we let the medical staff handle it, and in the event of a serious situation, say
someone goes into cardiac arrest, we are AED certified and we would take all those precautions,” Higdon said.
To avoid these injuries, Higdon suggests basic stretching routines as well as proper hydration, which will deflate the chance of muscle cramps. Also, wrapping your ankle before playing could also decrease the chance of rolling or spraining it.
