ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Colbie Caillat's new album brings back same typical sound

With her 2007 smash hits “Bubbly” and “Realize,” Colbie Caillat adored fans with her soothing pop-folk sound. Caillat’s lyrics are centered on a specific topic: young love and feeling bubbly around boys.

Her songs are catchy and since the release of her sophomore album, “Breakthrough” on Aug. 25, Caillat brings back the same adolescent sound from her first release. The lyrics are typical and each song seems to carry the same tune. The first single, “Fallin’ For You,” drones the same lyrical story of “Bubbly” and it’s almost as though this love story does not have an ending.

This is not to say that Caillat doesn’t have a strong talent; her voice is smooth and occasionally has a raspy quality which gives her voice character and makes it unique. She is passionate about her music but could be much stronger lyrically and on some songs, musically, to keep her music from fizzing out of the spotlight.

“You Got Me” and “Begin Again” are the only two songs on “Breakthrough” where Caillat brings in a more upbeat sound. Perhaps she should write more in that style to bring more personality and life to her songs, then her talent wouldn not go to waste.
