The Voluntary Action Center knows how important it is to have a hot meal.
Since July 1, VAC has been offering meals as a part of their community dinner program.
Tom Zucker, executive director for VAC, said these dinners have been made possible because of the stimulus package.
“Funding became available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment ACT as a part of the stimulus package,” Zucker said.
The meals are geared toward those who are struggling economically, giving them extra help.
Dinners are served at the DeKalb Senior Center, 330 Grove St., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The program will be running until Sept. 30, but may not continue after that date.
“If we receive more funding we can keep the dinners going, but we’ll have to see,” Zucker said.
Nancy Hicks, program director for VAC and coordinator for the senior lunch site, has seen a
great demand for the program.
“Our first dinner in July had 24 people and Tuesday’s had 80, which shows that it’s been going quite well,” Hicks said.
Hicks has heard a lot of positive comments from those at the dinners, with those attending the dinners telling her how grateful they are.
She thought this type of program was long overdue.
“I felt there has been a long need for something like this to help out those in the community,” she said.
Hicks has found the overall experience to be very rewarding and has enjoyed being a part of the program.
