Students wanting to get involved in campus politics and government can attend the candidate’s meetings for the upcoming Student Association Senate elections.
The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. today and Wednesday in the Holmes Student Center Lincoln Room. SA election commissioner, Patrick Frierson said students interested in running are required to attend one of the two meetings, as packets of information about the upcoming election will be distributed.
“We pass it out to those who are interested,” Frierson said.
It has been a mission for Frierson to get as many students as possible aware about the SA.
“Most students do not know how everything at NIU is run through the Student Association,” Frierson said. “Students should have a say-so on how funds are used.”
Frierson also said that he has been impressed by how reactive freshmen have been to the SA, and how interested they are in it.
Unlike the executive elections held in the spring, Senate candidates do not know how to circulate petitions in order to get on the ballot. Frierson said students only have to meet the SA’s requirements and apply.
According to the SA Constitution, all elected and appointed officials in the SA must have at least a 2.0 grade point average (or be in their first semester at NIU) and not be on probation/punishment for academic or criminal misconduct.
The SA elections are Sept. 29 and 30. For more information, visit the SA office in Campus Life Building Suite 180 or call 815-753-0483.
