Those who take care of the environment can be recognized for their positive work in DeKalb.

For the past 17 years, the People Responsible for Improving DeKalb’s Environment (P.R.I.D.E.) Award has been acknowledging people who have shown they care about the planet.

A person or business could be recognized for the award in areas such as preservation, education and public information, energy conservation and waste reduction.

Bill Finucane, chair for the Citizen Environmental Commission, said it’s always a good idea to show how others are doing something right for the environment in their own way.

Finucane said someone who wins the award could be doing something very small, but are still helping out in a big way.

“In the past we had someone win the award for using rain guards that collected the water in low spots, preventing it from entering the sewers which goes into the Kishwaukee River,” he said.

Jennifer Diedrich, DeKalb special projects coordinator, believes that this award inspires residents.

“The award raises awareness to not take the environment for granted, and in the process, inspires others as well,” Diedrich said.
